VELROSE
After a sheltered life inside Velrose Agricultural Trust and the Whitlock household, Lilah Velrose arrives at Syracuse University with three expectations pressed neatly into place: make the right connections, find a suitable mate who meets the Whitlocks’ standards, and take advantage of the free education offered along the way. It’s supposed to be practical. Respectable. A polished step toward the future chosen for her.
For Lilah, college is also the first glimpse of a world beyond VAT, the Whitlocks, and the rules that raised her. Syracuse is crowded, intimidating, and alive in ways she’s only ever imagined. There are classes, parties, dangerous friendships, pretty strangers, and moments where freedom feels close enough to touch, even if her body still knows how quickly that curiosity can lead to trouble.
Then Lilah catches the attention of the Ravelles, and the careful life prepared for her begins to fray. Their world is older, sharper, and far less forgiving than anything the Whitlocks promised her, but it also offers temptation in forms Lilah has never been taught how to refuse. For the first time, desire feels less like a duty to be managed and more like something she might be allowed to enjoy, even when every indulgence pulls her farther from the future arranged for her.
Lilah was sent to college to follow the path laid out for her, but her first year teaches her that wanting something for herself may be the most dangerous connection she can make. Every choice she keeps for herself makes the life waiting for her harder to return to, and the freedom she’s tasted harder to trust.
